Would it make sense to go out and buy a new camera so you can get the latest and greatest shots for that wedding? No way! It would make far more sense to rent the gear and pass the cost of renting it to the clients.
The same thing goes if you’re a wedding photographer who recently got a nature photography gig, live show gig, etc. There are occasions where that rare lens you’ve always wanted will come in handy. However, investing thousands of dollars into something when you can pay a few hundred to rent it for a week and get the shots you need makes far more financial sense.
Traveling With Camera Equipment Can Be Hard
Who wants to travel with all of their own equipment if they don’t have to? If you’re someone who travels often, then you know how much of a pain it can be to lug a huge bag of gear around. Plus, when putting your gear through TSA, there’s always the slight chance that you’ll never get to see it again. On the other hand, you might consider renting your equipment once you reach your destination. That way, you can pick it up from the local camera store or have it delivered to the place you’re staying for a small fee.
Of course, if you choose to go this route, it’s important to make your rental arrangements far in advance to ensure you’ll get the gear that you actually want. Plus, this will provide more than enough time for shipping and delivery if you need the equipment sent to your place.
