How To Identify Your Target Audience

Identify Your Current Customers

Prior to finding your target audience, you need to get a better idea of who your customers are. Check out your existing customers and write down their characteristics. Organize those characteristics into a customer profile.

Check out the customers who provide you with your top gross revenue and see what they have in common. How old are they? Are they male or female? Where are they located? Also look at repeat customers and customers you lose money on. In doing so, you can see how your existing customers affect your business.

Consider How Your Business Benefits Others

Beyond considering the characteristics of your customers, you might consider how your business benefits particular customers. For example, we run a blog that provides people with marketing advice, meaning we know that our main customers who benefit are likely small business owners or marketers.

Once you understand how your business is beneficial, you can begin understanding how these features create value for others.

Collect Demographic Data

Draw up a demographic portrait to understand your customer better. Try to make the customer profile as detailed as you possibly can. It can sometimes be helpful to look at your competitors and see what kind of people subscribe to their businesses.

Collect data such as location, age, gender, behavior, etc. You’ll be able to use this data to run marketing campaigns more effectively.

Send Your Customers Surveys

Find out how you convert your leads to customers using customer surveys. Anna Rubkiewicz from Survicate said that their company “ran a survey on some of our most popular articles on the blog and were astonished to collect over 600 answers – just within 3 days.”

You can do the same with your business to see what things are working and what things aren’t. Google Forms is a great place to start if you want to engage with your customers using surveys.

Look For Customer Feedback Trends

Once you have an understanding of the purpose of your product or service, you want to see what kinds of questions people are asking about them. You might also choose to look at reviews. Identify those that resonate most with your products or services and use that info to promote your content to those audiences.

The Importance Of Identifying Your Audience

By doing the hard work right away, you’ll be able to identify your target audience much faster. In doing so, you’ll be able to hone in on stronger marketing strategies.
